Yog darshanam is the composition of Maharishi Patanjali. There are four stanzas of this text. The number of sources is 194.

The word yoga has many meanings. The meaning of yoga will be the union, that is, through which the soul gets the knowledge of God, it is called yoga. The word yoga is also proved by yuj samadhau, which means that only the goal i.e. God is to be realized.

Just as there are four arrays in medical science, such as disease, root of disease, health and medicine. Similarly, there are four arrays of Yoga Shastra – world , root of world, Moksha, Mokshaopaya. In this philosophy, in order to get rid of afflictions and to contain the mind, the practice of eight limbs of yoga has been rendered as follows –

1. Yama – These five are considered – non-violence, truth, asteya, celibacy and aparigraha.

2. Niyama – These are also five – Shaucha, contentment, austerity, self-study and Ishwarpranidhan.

3. Asana – Asana is the name of sitting still and comfortably in one position for a long time.

4. Pranayama – The name of the separation of the movement of breath and exhalation is Pranayama.

5. Pratyahara – The name of turning the senses away from their objects of form, taste, etc., is called Pratyahara.

6. Dharana – To fix the mind in the body in a particular point is Dharana.

7. Meditation - Meditation is to engage in a flow of thoughts in an one point

8. Samadhi – When meditation is absorbed in the shape of the goal and leaves its form, that is Samadhi.
